Why not believe?

Ever been in one of those situations when your admission of being a Christian has resulted in scorn or ridicule for your belief? Such comments as: "I don't believe in that rubbish" or something similar.

Reply with, "Why not?"

And they will probably come out with something to do with evolution. That is not an answer. Ask them: "Well, who made you?" If they talk about a long time ago, as though that explains the beginning, millions of years is not an answer!

How does something come from nothing?

What would nothing look like? It cannot be described. Try imagining it. It is impossible for us sighted beings. If nothing existed in the beginning, where did the atoms and molecules that form shaped objects come from, and more important, where did the physical laws that hold them together originate?

How did the land and mountains form? We think they are being formed from the molten magma in the centre of the earth. Wrong. As winter comes upon the high mountains, the water, in the form of rain, falls on the mountain rocks and forms ice. Ice expands, and slowly exposes small cracks, eventually breaking off as small rocks, and tumbling down the mountains in the spring thaw to form scree, which is noticeable in the valleys of almost all mountains. If this were a characteristic of all mountains, and we were 14 billion years old, we would have no mountains now left anywhere in the world. We would only have undulating land.

The molten magma at the centre of our planet has nothing to do with rock formation. We are the only planet in our solar system with molten core!

How the rocks formed is explained in The Great Flood - the least explained and discussed part of the Bible; yet it intricately explains how the flood caused the world to be as it is nowadays. But that is beyond the scope of a blog!

Thanks Peter for this cool blog about stuff most of us, for whatever reason, missed out on at school. It's encouraging we can still learn by keeping our ears and eyes open to the wonder of who God is. I've come late to the learning party but am loving the experience.    

With regards to the photo of these wonderful South Island mountains, I want to say it was the best I could do with a cheap phone. However, the balance of sky verses the mountains was deliberate. The vastness of sky will always completely overawe mountains. But then sky is also small in comparison to all the other stuff floating among untold galaxies. How awesome is our creator God. He, unlike us, is not bound by time and space, yet He loves us. WHAT A MAJESTIC, LOVING GOD!!
