Finding the balance

Balance is an even distribution of weight, an amount left over, or a state of equilibrium.

As a rule balance allows created animals (including humans) to remain upright, up tight and, if required, up all night. Birds fly, monkeys swing, insects crawl, bees buzz, elephants and giraffes maintain their weirdly extended body shapes and, overall the universe stays revolving at a rate allowing creative creatures to get on with life without suffering from motion sickness.

However, we live in a time where 'life balance' means "having a healthy mix of time and energy for work, health, relationships, and personal well-being so we can switch off and recharge." Ai

So, what do we cut out or drop from our load to recharge? Who makes the call and who carries the extra load? Is this type of balance an excuse for leniency in our lives? Maybe life balance actually means honing down the wish list and managing the essentials in a normal time frame.

We are unlike other created animals who, I would suggest (without any back up), don't go through burn out, don't have 101 tasks to do each day, and don't take time in the gym, in the pub or to play sport. Somehow they seem to do their job as God programmed (finding food, tending to the family, and fending off animals wishing to eat them!) What have we got to worry about?

What's changed in the human arena? Is it because we were given a free will, the ability to make money, and exist in a time when people are more invested in themselves than anyone else. Is this a sign of the times. What bothers me is this 'life balance' is not available to all. Countries at war don't get any down time to grieve the loss of families. Natural disasters, areas of famine, etc demand complete dedication to the cause.

Maybe it's the expanding, rapid growth of computerisation, global interaction and other stuff which is way beyond my ken? Paul urges his readers "Don't be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transform by the renewing of your mind." Roms 12:2.  And don't forget, God's word is timeless!
