Discombobulated
Where am I, and what am I doing?!
Discombobulated means feeling completely confused, disordered, or unable to think clearly. It's an informal and humorous word describing a state of being flustered or disoriented. Welcome to my world.
How do we get in this state? I have a number of ideas - over busy, over committed, over the rat race and over aged!
Jesus took Peter, James and John up a high mountain where He was transfigured before them. Not something the fishermen had seen before. When Moses and Elijah appeared, Peter completely discombobulated himself into a corner. I'm sure he and the others were frightened by the what they witnessed, but Peter being a 'verb' - a doing man - had to do something! Maybe three shelters would enhance the situation!
But Jesus didn't take these disciples with Him to talk and share their views, but to witness His glory.
Mark Twain is said to have coined the phrase, "You can't depend on your eyes if your imagination is out of focus."
In my 'view' we can never depend on our own vision. We are 'ground dwellers' according to CS Lewis- though unlike the official invertebrates, we do have a back bone. "Ground dwellers are organisms that live, feed, and spend most of their lives primarily on or directly beneath the surface of the ground." This includes beetles, snails, worms, woodlice and centipedes. Their vision is limited to scratching around in the earth - I wonder if they ever look up.
Maybe that's one of the reasons Jesus took the three disciples up a high mountain. Looking up gives us a wide angle, inspiring view of God's handiwork. I figure dwelling in the awesomeness of God's creative power should dispels our discombobulation.
